Overview

The next update to the nation’s dietary guidelines will, for the first time ever, include recommendations for pregnant women and children from birth to age two.

Even though the American Academy of Pediatrics encourages young children’s diets to include a variety of foods and nutrients-- like vegetables, whole grains, iron and vitamin D-- researchers have found that many are falling short of that goal from the start.

How can we provide the knowledge, skills, and tools needed to make healthy food choices, starting at an early age? As we await the new guidelines, what steps can be taken now to ensure vulnerable populations in particular choose healthy foods? What role can federally funded food programs like WIC and SNAP play in making nutritious food accessible to those who need it the most and can community-based policies help promote healthier eating patterns?

The Hill will convene key health officials, lawmakers and subject experts for a conversation on maternal, infant and early childhood nutrition.
